Current Research Interests:

As a member of Dr. Bravo’s Lab Zannie is interested in researching  risk factors of PTSD and SUD as well as the worsening of symptoms of these disorders in an effort to inform referral efforts  that will result in long term treatment.

More About Me:

With an affinity for both literature and psychology, Zannie's his first research experience was in the summer of 2020 as a UNCF Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellow, researching for his project titled “Acts of Reclamation in Tanehisi Coates The Water Dancer and Octavia Butler’s Kindred”. Over the course of two years Zannie conducted extensive qualitative analysis of the protagonist in each of these neo-slave narratives and later combined quantitative component to his research that would demonstrate that a relationship exists between memory and trauma. His research also demonstrated that through confrontation of the traumatic experiences individuals can begin the process of healing.

In the summer of 2021 participated in Syracuse’s Undergraduate Trauma Research Training Program and underwent research for his project titled “Depression Symptom Severity, Childhood Trauma History, and Non-Childhood Trauma History as Predictors of PTSD Symptom Severity in a Medical Detoxification Setting” under the mentorship of Dr. Bryce Hruska. Within this program Zannie gained firsthand knowledge of the negative effects certain military experiences have on personnel and what coping mechanisms, such as substance use, are a used to address these effects.
